| GREAT ADVENTURE: AUSANGATE TREK - CHACHANI ASCENT | | DESCRIPTION | The Ausangate circuit offers a unique hike around one of South America's greatest mountains (6,380 m high). Remote, charming, wild and spectacular - such are likely characteristics of your impressions on this tour. We pass a few shepherds' villages left behind in time, appreciating their daily work, their traditions and customs. The impressive Andean scenery reveals us wonderful lagunas and impressive glaciers as well as - with some luck - the elusive fauna of the altiplano. Furthermore, this trekking prepares you in an ideal way for a later successful ascent of the Nevados Chachani (6,076 m), Ampato (6,318 m) or Coropuna (6,425 m) near Arequipa, all snow capped extinct volcanos over 6,000 meters (20,000 feet) high. | | | ITINERARY | The evening before departure for the trek you will meet the tour guide in Cuzco, starting point for this tour. DAY 1: CUSCO - TINKI Early in the morning we pick up the participants right at their hotels. Along the Vilcanota river we head towards the village Urcos. Along the way we have a chance to look into the Church of Andahuaylillas (the sixth church of Perú). Soon after we move along the road leading from Cusco to Puerto Maldonado towards Tinki, a small and scenic village typical of the remote Andes. We spend the first night either in camp or in a very basic guesthouse. DAY 2: TINKI - UPIS Today we hit the trail. Passing tiny settlements and lonely shepherds we will have lunch at the foot of snow capped Nevado Ausangate. In the evening we camp near the thermal baths of Upis. DAY 3: UPIS - PUCACOCHA Higher we strive, passing 4,700 m. (14,850 ft.) over the sea level, enjoying the spectacular views of Laguna Pucacoccha, where - on the West side of the Ausangate mountain - the snow often reaches down to our elevation. Be prepared to awake in a frosty white landscape, enjoy the majestic ice of the Nevado Ausangate reaching close to you. DAY 4: PUCACOCHA - CHILCAPINAYA After breakfast we head for the Palomani pass (5,100 m/15,840 ft. of elevation), from where the view of the Nevado Ausangate and of the whole Cordillera Vilcanota are breathtaking. After lunch we hike towards Chilcapinaya, where we camp for the night. DAY 5: CHILCAPINAYA - PACHASPATA Breakfast, then we ascend into the Valley Jampa. We continue around the Laguna Ticllacocha, finally master our last pass of 5,000 meters (15,345 ft.) to camp at Pachaspata. DAY 6: PACHASPATA - PACCHANTA Rather relaxing day. After breakfast we descend into the settlement Pacchanta, lunch and munch finally near the thermal baths nearby. DAY 7: TINKI - CUSCO Our final day up here. We complete the circuit to Tiki, not far away anymore. After our last Ausangate-lunch we return by bus to the city of Cusco in the evening. DAY 8: CUZCO - AREQUIPA Transfer from Cusco to Arequipa. We bring you to your hotel, help with the gear. In the evening meeting with the Guide. DAY 9: AREQUIPA - BASE CAMP OF THE CHACHANI Pickup of the Chachani hikers in the morning. After a 3 hour ride we reach the Chachani base camp at appx. 5,000 meters elevation, from where we hike about 2 hours, to Camp 1 at 5,350 m., our destination for today. The air feels already thin again... DAY 10: BASE CAMP - SUMMIT of CHACHANI - AREQUIPA The ascent to the summit we begin very early this morning, at 4 am. Slowly we hike uphill, for appx. 5 to 6 hours, until we reach the peak at 6,076 m. Close to the deep blue sky, we feel elated and exhausted. The views are a well-deserved reward, be it over the old crater nearby or uncounted Nevados in the distance. The view from such elevation is incredible. In the soft sand and tiny gravel of the Chachani we descend easily all the way down to the camp and back to the car. After arriving in Arequipa every successful Chachani-mountaineer will be rewarded with a 'mountain certificate' of Carlos Zarate himself, proving that she/he has been on that peak on this special day. | | PERSONAL EQUIPMENT | · sleeping bag, suitable clothing, · gloves, hat/cap or sombrero and sun glasses, · hiking and trekking shoes, · backpack for your personal necessities, · water bottle or thermo container, · crampons, ice ax and/or hiking poles, · lantern and what you consider necessary.
